Lock Repair Questions
My key goes into the lock but won’t turn. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. This is often caused by a worn-out key, a dry cylinder, or a “frozen” tumbler pin. Before you force it and break the key, try lubricating it with a silicone-based spray (never WD-40). If that doesn’t work, we can likely disassemble and repair the cylinder without replacing the whole lock.
My door lock is “spinning” in a complete circle. Can you fix this?
Yes. This usually happens with Mortise or Rim cylinders when the set screw has come loose or the tailpiece (cam) is broken. It is a very common mechanical failure. We can re-secure the cylinder or replace the cam tailpiece to restore proper function immediately.
I have to pull up (or push hard) on the door to get it to lock. Why?
This is actually a door alignment issue, not a broken lock. Over time, hinges sag and the latch bolt no longer lines up with the strike plate on the frame. We can adjust your strike plate and hinges to realign the door so it locks smoothly and effortlessly.
Can you repair an old antique lock on my historic home?
Yes. Many historic homes in Cincinnati have beautiful mortise locks that just need internal cleaning and spring replacement. Instead of replacing them with modern hardware that doesn’t match the style, we can often refurbish the internal mechanism to make it work like new again.
Is it cheaper to repair a lock or just replace it?
It depends on the quality of the lock. If it is a cheap residential knob, replacement is often more cost-effective. However, if it is a high-quality commercial lever or a decorative handleset, repairing is usually much cheaper than buying new hardware. We will always give you an honest assessment of which option saves you money.
